Stowe, a stunning new development

About Stowe
Originally the village of Stowe was built in the Anglo-Saxon period. Its name refers to an ancient holy place of some eminence with the local community. The village was probably abandoned in the middle of the seventeenth century when Sir Peter Temple enclosed a large deer park. The small parish church still survives in the shadow of the great house, and Christian worship still takes place there every Sunday. Within the parish border of Stowe lie the hamlets of Boycott, Dadford and Lamport.

Stowe house
Formerly the country seat of the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos, Stowe House is now occupied by Stowe School. The landscaped gardens, including its many monuments, were acquired by the National Trust in 1990, and are open to the public. The National Trust is currently overseeing a complete restoration programme of the grounds, temples and follies.

Stowe School
is a British independent school in Stowe, Buckinghamshire, sometimes referred to as a 'public school'. It was founded on 11 May 1923 by JF Roxburgh, initially with 99 male pupils. It is a member of the Rugby Group and Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference. The school is currently becoming fully co-educational. As of 2006, there are 493 boys in total, and 103 girls.

The school has been based since its beginnings at Stowe House, formerly the country seat of the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos. Along with many of the other buildings on the school's estate, the main house is now a Grade 1 Listed Building and is maintained by the Stowe House Preservation Trust.

The school is used as a first class cricket ground by Northamptonshire CCC, and is the home ground of the Northants Second XI.
